Fuel efficiency and muscle cars are normally about as synonymous with each other as puritanical driving and Keith Richards. However, the automotive industry has seen some major changes from the one in 1967, a period in time when no one would care to think twice about taking a long-haul trip upcountry in a fuel-guzzling vehicle.

Flash-forward to today and you realize stringent fuel economy requirements and volatile gas prices make a strong case when it comes to engine efficiency, and this is especially true with what GM has done with its fleet of vehicles including the new 2017 Chevrolet Camaro.

The base engine offers a brawny 2.0L four-cylinder turbocharged engine rated at 275 hp and 295 lbs. ft. of torque. Chevy reckons the fuel economy ratings of the four banger to stand at an impressive 30 mpg/highway.

The platform under which it is based continues to be “Alpha” – a mechanical underpinning that’s also used by both the 2017 Cadillac CTS and ATS. What the platform means is that the new Camaro is lower, narrower and shorter just like its predecessor. Chevy says the new Camaro has shed about 200 pounds relative to the previous vehicle thanks to clever engineering and extensive use of lightweight materials on its panels and chassis.
