The new 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 is the most race-ready, track-capable ever built. And for 2017, Ford Performance is adding even more features to the already high-tech smorgasbord of technologies available. Unlike in the past when customers had to choose between additional features and the Track Package, Ford has now made the package standard. This in essence means buyers will have plenty of features they want along with having the option of specifying even more, albeit at you own cost. Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance had this to say, “Now more than ever, buyers have features they’ve wanted all along without undergoing any extra cost. This goes a long way to show how Ford Performance is always listening to consumer feedback.” For 2017, some of the new features to expect include the aforementioned Track Package which features a MagneRide damping system, engine oil, differential and transmission coolers, a high-downforce deck-lid spoiler, and aluminum tower-to-tower brace.
Three new colors: Grabber Blue, Lightning Blue, and Ruby Red Metallic that now replace the Competition Orange and Deep Impact Blue colors. Two new available packages: Convenience and the Electronics packages. The latter comes equipped with a nine-speaker audio system, voice-activated navigation, and SYNC 3 infotainment system while the former package bundles leather-trimmed power sport seats and all the existing options.
Here’s a bit of history. Ford conceptualized the GT350 nameplate as early as five decades ago. Beneath its hood was a powerful 4.7L V8 engine that offered a decent 271 ponies and was later uprated to offer 35 more ponies at the Shelby American’s shop. And it was this same place that it also got front disc brakes, larger rear drum brakes, and heavy-duty rear axles. Due to the overwhelming success the model got in its first run in the segment, Ford continued offering it more cosmetic changes than performance updates for the next 4 years. After that, the nameplate went into a long hiatus and only resurfaced from abyss in 2011 when the moniker returned as the 5th gen model.
Now in its sixth generation, the new 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 with its enormous strength and muscle, is set to take on competitors such as the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 and the Dodge Challenger. The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 according to rumors is set for a major revamp that will include a power improvement in among other things it is set to offer. In the meantime however, there’s the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 that comes fitted with a 7.0L naturally-aspirated V8 engine able to crank out 505 horsepower and 481 lbs. ft. of torque. The Challenger on the other side comes with a 6.4L HEMI V8 engine rated at 485 ponies and 475 lbs. ft. of torque.
2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Release Date & Price
From the ordering guide Ford has provided, the new model is slated to go for sale for $49,995- price that also takes care of the gas-guzzler tax and destination charge. This therefore means buyers stand to get more value relative to either the Challenger Hellcat or the Camaro Z28. Options are available too.
Pricing for the 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R hasn’t been offered yet, but Ford is due to make an announcement soon. Its release date should be expected sometime in the 1st Q of 2017.
2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Exterior
Visually, the new GT350 is perhaps the meanest looking Mustang ever created. Aside from the headlamps, everything else is completely different from the base Mustang. In order to reduce drag, the whole nose has been shrunk in every direction. Away from that, there’re an assortment of aerodynamic upgrades available including angled ducts, huge hood vent, and a new splitter.
